The Air Force Institute for Advanced Distributed Learning (AFIADL), formerly known as the Extension Course Institute (ECI), is located at Maxwell AFB - Gunter Annex, Alabama. One of the many things ECI does is publish the Career Development Courses (CDCs) for Department of Defense (DoD) firefighters. These correspondence courses are written and developed by subject matter experts through the Air Force Civil Engineer Support Agency.
When dealing with college credit for course completion there are basically two categories for the fire protection CDCs. The period prior to national certification (1986 through the late 1990s, depending on the course) and the period after the DoD adopted national consensus standards and achieved International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) accreditation (1993 to present). Note, there were CDCs prior to 1986 but they do not have college credit values specifically for them.
ECI utilizes the American Council on Education's (ACE) Military Evaluations Program to establish college credit recommendations for their courses. The results of these evaluations are published in the Guide to the Evaluation of Educational Experience in the Armed Services. ACE has made this information available online at: Military Guides Online .edu. This publication can also be purchased commercially or if you have access to a military installation with an education services office you can usually view it there.
Note for USAF Enlisted Personnel: The Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) does not apply credit for completion of CDCs towards CCAF degree programs when completed as part of skill level upgrade requirements. Instead, CCAF awards "Internship" credit based upon attaining the different skill levels. This credit represents the entire "On the Job Training" (OJT) process including CDC completion as well other upgrade requirements. See the CCAF area of this site for further details.
